Regular retail shipments from multiple markets
BiGDUG is an online retailer of storage, shelving and workplace equipment. Our relationship with the company started in October 2007 when we facilitated an air freight shipment from Shanghai to the UK. Since then, we have handled more regular shipments for BiGDUG, in line with the growth of the company and its shipping requirements.
Hemisphere arranges ocean container shipments from six countries to BiGDUG’s UK warehouse. There is a finite number of delivery slots per week, so it’s important to sequence shipment arrival dates at regular intervals. Daily updates are provided for shipments and vessel arrivals to match the required delivery dates, with the aim of reducing the chance of quay rent or container detention at port.

Tackling logistics challenges together
Over the years, the volume of shipments we manage for BiGDUG has grown, increasing the complexity that comes with monitoring vessels and ports. We have developed our shipment tracking and reporting in conjunction with the customer, alerting if a vessel is late or a delivery slot won’t work.
The Christmas and Easter periods often pose a challenge, as is quite common across the logistics and retail sectors. Despite best laid plans, vessel arrival dates do change, and coupled with BiGDUG’s warehouse shutting down for holidays, there is extra focus to try and keep shipments moving to avoid additional charges.
During the early stages of the Covid-19 lockdown, social distancing requirements meant the warehouse was struggling with the unloading of handball containers. To save time at the BiGDUG warehouse and ease pressure on its operation, Hemisphere arranged for containers to be unloaded at our warehousing facility and the product palletised before delivering into BiGDUG.
Since 2007, Hemisphere and BiGDUG have developed a good understanding of how each other works, ensuring that any short-notice delivery changes are accommodated efficiently and without complication.
