There are numerous shipping, freight and logistics organisations around the world, all of which help promote the industry and give the people working within it a voice. Here are some of the most noteworthy trade organisations operating in the UK, EU and internationally.
BIFA (British Freight Association)
BIFA is the UK trade association for UK-registered companies that are involved in the international movement of freight by air, land or sea. It provides customs, freight, dangerous goods and air cargo security training for the industry.
CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport)
A professional body that represents individuals and organisations that are involved or working in the logistics and transport sectors.
CIPS (Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply)
CIPS works to promote high standards of skill, ability and integrity among those engaged in purchasing and supply chain management.
ESC (European Shippers’ Council)
The ESC represents the interests of 12 national transport organisations made up of manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers, collectively known as ‘shippers’. The Freight Transport Association is the UK member.
FIATA (International Federation of Freight Forwarding Associations)
A non-governmental organisation that represents 40,000 forwarding and logistics companies around the world.
FTA (Freight Transport Association)
The FTA represents the interests of companies that move goods by every method of transport. Its members operate more than 200,000 goods vehicles and consign over 70% of the freight travelling by sea.
GSF (Global Shippers’ Forum)
Incorporated and registered in the UK, the Global Shippers’ Forum represents the interests of shipping organisations in Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Africa.
ICS (International Chamber of Shipping)
The International Chamber of Shipping is the world’s leading shipping organisation that represents all sectors and trades and over 75% of the world’s shipping fleet.
ICS (Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers)
Not to be confused with the other ICS, the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers is the international professional body for the commercial shipping industry. It offers a range of qualifications and defines globally recognised instructions for the transportation of goods.
WSC (World Shipping Council)
The WSC provides a voice for the liner shipping industry and partners with governments and other stakeholders to solve some of the world’s most challenging transportation problems.
